An Essential Guide through Cancer offered from an Oncologist’s Perspective
By Monique Semein, MD

A Collaborative Work of Knowledge, Heart & Healing
This volume was created to accompany you — one conversation, one decision, one discovery, and one day at a time.
Whether you are newly diagnosed, actively receiving treatment, living in survivorship, facing recurrence, or walking beside someone you love, these pages offer more than information alone. They provide understanding when questions seem endless, reassurance when uncertainty feels overwhelming, and a gentle reminder that you are never defined by your diagnosis.
Throughout these pages you will find evidence-informed explanations, visual guides, gentle moments of perspective, thoughtful prompts for conversations with your healthcare team, and references for those who wish to explore topics more deeply.
Most importantly: You are not expected to become an expert overnight. You are simply being invited to learn — one step, one conversation, and one day at a time.
Perhaps your world changed with a single phone call.
Perhaps you have been living with uncertainty for weeks or months.
Perhaps you are holding this book for yourself… or for someone you love.
However these pages found their way into your hands, we want you to know one thing before we begin:
You are not alone.
There is no right way to feel today.
There is no right way to process a diagnosis.
There is no timetable for understanding everything at once.
There is no expectation that you will remember every detail you read.
There is only this moment.
And this next breath.
As you move through these pages, we invite you to be gentle with yourself.
Read a little. Pause often. Return whenever you need. Ask questions. Reflect. Cry if you need to. Smile when hope finds its way back to you.
This book was never meant to be read in a hurry. It was created to accompany you — one conversation, one decision, one discovery, and one day at a time. Some chapters may answer questions you have today. Others may become meaningful weeks or months from now. Trust your own pace. Trust your own journey.
Most of all…
Remember that you are far more than a diagnosis.
You are a person with a life that continues to hold meaning.
You are someone’s child… someone’s parent… someone’s partner… someone’s dear friend… someone whose story is still unfolding.
Cancer may become part of your story. It is not the whole of your story.
So before we begin… take one slow breath. Allow your shoulders to soften. Know that these pages were written with great care. May they offer understanding when uncertainty arises… clarity when decisions feel overwhelming… comfort when the path feels difficult… and hope that is grounded in knowledge, compassion, and truth.
Welcome.
We are honored to walk beside you.
“One page. One conversation. One breath. One day at a time.”
If you are holding this book because you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer, we first want to acknowledge the moment you are in.
You may be feeling overwhelmed, frightened, uncertain, or simply exhausted by the amount of information that has suddenly entered your life. You may have questions that have not yet been answered — or questions you have not yet found the words to ask. Whatever you are feeling today is a natural response to an extraordinary circumstance.
Before you turn the next page, we invite you to pause. Take a slow breath. There is no need to read this book all at once.
This book was intentionally created to become a trusted companion — one you can return to whenever questions arise, whenever new decisions are presented, or whenever you simply need reassurance that you are not walking this journey alone.
Every chapter is designed to stand on its own. You may choose to read from beginning to end, or you may turn directly to the section that speaks to your immediate concerns. There is no “right” way to use this book. Allow your own needs to guide you.
Clear Medical Information — Evidence-informed explanations presented in language that is intended to be understandable without sacrificing accuracy.
Illustrations and Graphics — Visual guides designed to simplify complex concepts and make them easier to understand.
Reflection & Encouragement — Gentle moments woven throughout to provide perspective, reassurance, and emotional support alongside the medical information.
Questions to Consider — Thoughtful prompts that may help you prepare for conversations with your healthcare team and become an active participant in your care.
Resources for Continued Learning — References and additional resources for those who wish to explore topics more deeply.
As you read, remember that medicine continues to evolve. New discoveries, treatments, and technologies are continually advancing the field of oncology. While every effort has been made to ensure that the information in this book reflects current knowledge at the time of publication, your healthcare team remains your most important source of guidance for your individual situation.
We also encourage you to keep a notebook nearby. Many readers find it helpful to write down questions, thoughts, or conversations they wish to revisit during future appointments. Your journey is uniquely your own, and your questions matter.
Most importantly, please remember this:
You are not expected to become an expert overnight. You are simply being invited to learn — one step, one conversation, and one day at a time.
May these pages offer clarity when confusion arises, understanding when information feels overwhelming, and hope that is grounded in knowledge, compassion, and truth.
We are honored to walk beside you.

To every individual whose life has been forever changed by the words, “You have cancer,” this series is dedicated to you. We honor your courage, your resilience, and the deeply personal journey that unfolds from that moment forward. Whether you are newly diagnosed, actively receiving treatment, living in survivorship, facing recurrence, or approaching the end of life’s journey, we hope these pages offer more than information alone. May they provide understanding when questions seem endless, reassurance when uncertainty feels overwhelming, and a gentle reminder that you are never defined by your diagnosis, but by the extraordinary strength and humanity you carry within you.
We also dedicate this work to the families, friends, caregivers, and loved ones who walk beside those they cherish. Your quiet acts of compassion, steadfast presence, and unwavering support often become the foundation upon which hope is sustained. Cancer is never experienced by one person alone; it touches entire families, circles of friendship, and communities of care. It is our hope that these books become trusted companions for all who seek knowledge, comfort, and confidence as they navigate this journey together.
Finally, we dedicate this series to the physicians, nurses, researchers, therapists, patient navigators, social workers, chaplains, and every member of the healthcare community whose lives are devoted to easing suffering and advancing the care of those living with cancer. Inspired by the remarkable progress of medical science and guided by a shared belief that knowledge is most powerful when offered with compassion.
We offer these books with deep respect, humility, and hope. May they help bridge the space between scientific excellence and the human heart, so that every reader feels informed, supported, and gently accompanied along the path ahead.
With compassion, hope, and enduring respect,
Monique Semein, MD & Rev. Windi Braden, RN (Ret.)
When I first imagined creating this book, I believed I was writing a single resource that would help my patients better understand their diagnosis and treatment. Like many physicians, I had witnessed how overwhelming a cancer diagnosis can be. During appointments, I strive to explain complex medical information, answer important questions, discuss treatment options, and offer reassurance, all within a limited amount of time and often during one of the most emotionally difficult days in a person’s life.
Again and again, I found myself wishing my patients had a trusted companion they could take home — a resource that would gently explain what we had discussed, answer the questions that arise later, and provide reliable guidance during the days and weeks that follow.
As work began on what would become the Breast Cancer volume, something unexpected happened. The project grew. It quickly became apparent that no single book could adequately address the unique biology, treatments, questions, and emotional experiences associated with each type of cancer. What began as one book evolved into a much larger vision: a comprehensive educational library dedicated to helping individuals and families navigate the most common cancers with clarity, confidence, and hope.
From the beginning, I knew that medical expertise alone would not be enough. Scientific accuracy is essential, but so is the way information is shared. Cancer affects far more than the body. It touches every aspect of a person’s life — their emotions, relationships, family, identity, future, and sense of security. Information offered without compassion can feel overwhelming. Compassion offered without reliable information leaves important questions unanswered. Patients deserve both.
Most importantly, I hope you know this: You are far more than a diagnosis. Behind every pathology report is a human being with hopes, fears, questions, relationships, and dreams. Behind every treatment plan is a life that deserves compassion, respect, and understanding.
With respect, compassion, and hope,
